The Mona Lisa Theft
The Mona Lisa was painted in the 1500s.
Leonardo Da Vinci painted it while he was living in Florence. It is the
portrait of a woman with a landscape at her back. The portrait shows harmony in
the woman’s smile and a connection with nature.
Mona Lisa became famous in the 1860s while
the art critics were studying this important symbol from the Renaissance
period. Everybody learned about Mona Lisa when the painting disappeared from
the Louvre Museum in France. Vincenzo Peruggia planned the crime in 1911. Three
Italian men stayed inside the gallery during the night. The next day, while
people were visiting the museum, they stole the painting. Peruggia was trying
to sell the Mona Lisa in the black market, when the police announced the
robbery, and he had to keep it for two years. In 1913, Peruggia was doing
business with an art dealer, but he reported Peruggia to the police. The police
arrested and sent Peruggia to prison. Now the French government is the owner of
Mona Lisa, and people admire this art work in the Louvre Museum in France.
